"Ticket to the Fair" by David Foster Wallace was originally published in Harper's Magazine, July 1994.
Crowded, grimy illustrations capture the chaos of the Illinois State Fair. Upon a closer look, a candy apple is vested with hair and a carnie is reading a nudie magazine. The buzz and grime of the fair contrasts the the isolated, rural landscape and lifestyle of the fair goers. I referenced the humorous, detailed and often vulgar illustrations of cartoonist Robert Crumb to capture the complexities of the fair as recorded by Wallace.
